2010 First Spouse 1/2 Ounce Gold Coins

The 2010 editions of the First Spouse gold coins are going fast. Mary Todd Lincoln is still available in both the uncirculated and proof coin, Buchanan is available only in uncirculated and Abigail Fillmore is still available in Proof. Jane Pierce has sold out in both.

The United States Mint is currently scheduled to release the 2011 American Eagle Gold Proof Coins on April 21, 2011. The 2011 American Eagle Gold Uncirculated Coins are currently scheduled for release on May 5, 2011. Check at http://www.usmint.gov for further updates.

The 2010 American Buffalo One Ounce Gold Proof Coin is curently available from the Mint and is priced at $1,710 at today's gold prices.

After taking the 2010 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set™ off sale when priced at $31.95, they are back with the new price set at $39.95.

The 2011 United States Mint America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set will go on sale from the Mint on April 1 at noon Eastern Time (ET). The set will be priced at $41.95 and will contain proof quality versions of the quarter-dollar coins honoring Gettysburg National Military Park (Pennsylvania), Glacier National Park (Montana), Olympic National Park (Washington), Vicksburg National Military Park (Mississippi), and Chickasaw National Recreation Area (Oklahoma). These quarters are struck in lustrous 90 percent silver.

America the Beautiful Silver Proof Sets

A few days ago someone pointed out to me that if you purchase 10 of the 2010 America the Beautiful Silver Proof Sets, you would get about 9 ounces of silver. They cost $32.95 each for a total of $329.50 plus $4.95 shipping for a total cost of $334.45 or $37.16 per ounce.

At today's silver price of about $34.71, 9 Silver American Eagles would cost you about $367 delivered or $40.77 per ounce. At higher silver prices, the difference would be even greater. I managed to get in an order for 10 sets, but today when I went back to order 10 more, they have been taken off the catalog with the message: This product is temporarily unavailable . My sets got delivered today and they are beautiful. Keep track of what the mint is selling...sometimes with the price of silver and gold moving with great volatility you may be able to pick up some bargains before they can update their prices.

2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative Coins Available February 25

The United States Mint announced to day that the 2011 Medal of Honor Commemorative gold and silver Coins would be available to order on February 25, 2011. The coins were authorized by the Medal of Honor Commemorative Coin Act of 2009. There will be a maximum of 100,000 $5 gold coins and 500,000 silver dollars minted. The coins will be available in proof and uncirculated qualities.

The coins are being released in recognition and celebration of the establishment of the Medal of Honor in 1861, to honor the American service members who have been recipients of the Medal of Honor and to promote awareness of how ordinary Americans can challenge fate and change the course of history.

Ronald Reagan Commemorative Gold and Silver Coins

Congressman Bob Latta (R-Bowling Green, Ohio) recently files legislation, H.R. 497, the Ronald Reagan Commemorative Coin Act, which would authorize the minting of $5 gold and $1 silver coins commemorating the late President. Specifications of the coins are as follows:
(1) $5 GOLD COIN - Not more than 50,000 $5 coins, which shall
(A) weigh 8.359 grams;
(B) have a diameter of 0.850 inches;
(C) contain 90 percent gold and 10 percent alloy.

(2) $1 SILVER COIN - Not more than 300,000 $1 coins, which shall
(A) weigh 26.73 grams;
(B) have a diameter of 1.500 inches;
(C) contain 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper.

U.S. Mint Gold Coin Updates

Noted on the Mint website this week, all 2010 Proof Gold American Eagle coins have sold out. The one ounce, half ounce and the four coin proof set had all sold out awhile ago. The quarter ounce and tenth ounce coins finished sales this past week.

Final mintage figures for the 2010 Proof Gold Eagles were as follows:

1 Ounce - 25,000
1/2 ounce - 10,000
1/4 ounce - 10,000
1/10 ounce - 20,000
4 coin set - 35,000

The Mint also announced that the 2011 United States Army Commemorative Coins will be available for sale tomorrow, Janaury 31, 2011, at 12 noon EST. There are three coins in this program:

$5 Gold coin made from 90% gold with a 100,000 mintage limit
$1 Silver coin made from 90% silver with a 500,000 mintage limit
50 cent coin with a mintage limit of 750,000

These numbers include both proof and uncirculated coins, though the numbers of each haven't been released yet.

Well, the new year has arrived, and so have the 2011 gold coins. Already available or soon to be are the 2011 American Gold Eagle, 2011 Canada Maple Leaf, 2011 Chinese Gold Panda, 2011 South African Krugerrand and the 2011 Australian Koala.

With gold trading at a three month low today, around $1331 as this is written, if you have been planning to buy gold coins, this may be a good time to jump in. If, on the other hand, you aren't sure yet, there is talk of further weakness in the precious metals...maybe waiting a bit will get you an even better entry point.

OK, I know it's a gold coin investing blog, but with silver flying up at just under $30 an ounce, you really need to take a look at silver and make it part of your investment portfolio. Here is a quick list of the newest silver coins available now.

Canada has a couple of coins available to investors. First up is the 2011 Silver Wolf, a one ounce coin made from .9999 pure silver and part of the "Wildlife Series". These coins will have a low mintage and as part of a three year set, will be popular with collectors and investors alike. Don't wait on this one or you'll see the price rising.

Canada also has the 1 ounce 2011 Maple Leaf, minted from .9999 silver. Recognized the world over and a great quality coin, the Maple Leaf is one of the most popular and reasonably priced of the world's silver investment coins. APMEX has these priced as low as $2.49 over spot.

The United States Mint has produced the 2011 Silver American Eagle, now on sale from mint authorized dealers and expected to ship by January 14. The Eagle is one ounce and made from .999 silver. This year is expected to have a low allocation, and the mint may have problems keeping up with demand. Buy these early and you will save on the premium these will demand later on.

2011 Canada Gold Coins

If you are looking for some new gold coins to invest in, why not set your sights north of the border. I'm talking about Canada. The Canadian Mint puts out several gold coins each year ranging from 14K to .999. The coins are always beautifully designed and mintages are kept low, which bodes well for future value. The 2011 Canadian gold collector's coins now available to the public have been announced.

Celebrating the 175th Anniversary of Canada's First Railway, Canada issued the 2011 $100 Gold Coin. Showing the steam locomotive Dorchester, the coin's design is taken from the painting by Canadian artist J.D. Kelly. Struck from 14K gold and weighing 12 grams (about 7 grams of gold) this coin has a limited mintage of 3,000 and retails for $639.95 CDN (about $642.90 USD).

The 2011 22-KARAT Gold Coin - S.S. BEAVER is the final coin in the seven year Historical Commerce series. This proof quality coin is 22K gold weighing 16 grams (14.66 grams of gold) and is limited to a mintage of 2,800 with a retail price of $1,079.95 CDN (about $1,084USD).

The seventh gold coin in Canada's series presenting the Coats of Arms of the provinces, the 2011 $300 Gold Coin shows the Manitoba Coat of Arms. Minted from 14K gold, the coin weighs 60 grams (almost 35 grams of gold). There will only be 500 coins minted and sells for $2,429.95 CDN (about $2,441 USD).

The 2011 Gold Maple Leaf set celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mint Refinery. This set is dated 1911-2011 and includes a 1 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/20 ounce coin and a gold-plated 99.99% pure silver commemorative medallion. There were only 750 sets produced. They went on sale January 4 and have already sold out. They were priced at $3,739.95 CDN (about $3,757.23 USD).

The eighth coin in the Canadian wildlife series, the 2011 1/25 oz. Gold Coin features a flock of Canada Geese on the obverse. This is a limited mintage of just 10,000 coins and the retail price is $109.95 CDN (about $110.45 USD). The coin weighs 1.27 grams ans is pure gold.

Seeing the quick sellout of the Maple Leaf set shows how small mintages and great designs can make for a very desirable investment. Canadian gold coins are a good bet to increase in value over the years. Don't wait too long to order, you may be shut out some of the others, as well.

Gold Stocks and ETF's Compared to Bullion

We read all sorts of articles telling us we should invest in gold bullion, coins, stocks, etf's or mutual funds. We know that gold bullion and non-numismatic gold coins will follow the price of gold, the only difference being the percentage markup which can be from 1-20% or more depending on type, size and quantity of coin/bar purchased.

I decided to check a bundle of gold stocks and ETF's (Exchange Traded Funds, which act like and can be purchased like a stock, but are supposed to track the price of gold directly) and see how they fared against the spot price of gold. I arbitrarily chose October 1, 2009 as a start and October 1, 2010 as a finish date.

New York Spot Gold closed on 10/1/09 at $999.90 and 10/1/10 at $1318.60 for a one year gain of 32%.

I looked at 4 ETF's:
SPDR Gold Trust (GLD) (+32%)
Market Vectors Gold Miners Fund (GDX) (+31%)
Central Gold Trust (Canada)(GTU) (+29%)
Proshares Ultra Gold (UGL) (+64%)

Three of them are supposed to track gold, while the Proshares Ultra Gold is supposed to double the move of the spot gold price and that is pretty much what each of them did. With the Exchange Traded Funds, you can buy them just like a stock, so they will cost about $10 to buy and $10 to sell, depending on the broker you use. Additionally, there is a fee for administration and expenses for running the ETF which seems to be in the 1% area and is reflected in the share price.

I took a look at several common gold mining stocks as well:

NovaGold (NG) (+82%)
Gold Fields Limited (GFI) (+14%)
Gold Corp (GG) (+14%)
Gold Reserve Inc (GRZ) (+63%)

Cameco (CCJ) (+6%)

There is a much wider spread in results in the stocks, due in part to cost of mining the gold which can vary widely, as well as things like weather, political actions and economic variables like labor disputes.

Overall, it would seem like ETF's can follow gold prices far better than gold stocks without all the hassle of storage that comes with buying and owning the physical metal.

New $5 Gold Coins -- 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act

H.R.1177 -- 5-Star Generals Commemorative Coin Act has been passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives. This act will provide that in 2013, three coins will be minted to commemorate five United States Army 5-Star Generals, George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower, Henry 'Hap' Arnold, and Omar Bradley.

There will be a $5 gold coin in 90% gold and 10% alloy which will have a 100,000 coin limit. Also, a $1 silver dollar in 90% silver and 10% copper with a limit of 500,000 coins and a clad half dollar made with a 750,000 limit. The coins will all be minted in both Proof and uncirculated condition.

5 Tips to Gold Coin Investment

As gold has exploded in value recently, gold coin prices have followed. Since they are now so expensive, you need to use care when making your purchases. While your local coin dealer used to be the only game in town, the internet now provides you the opportunity to get better prices on many coins, but gives you a few more things to think about when buying your gold coins.

1. When you are shelling out big money for your gold coin, the reliability of the dealer is a major concern. For a store, you can check with the local Better Business Bureau to see if there are any outstanding complaints. If the dealer is a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG), that is a good sign. If you are buying through an EBay auction, make sure to check the seller's feedback rating first. If it's very low, or there are many negatives, think twice (and a third time) before spending a large sum with them. Some Ebayer's will buy or sell a number of very inexpensive items to build up their ratings, then jump in selling big ticket items. So if you see their previous transactions all seem to be $5-$10 items and they are all of a sudden selling $1500 coins, watch out. Before bidding on large ticket items, ask if the seller will agree to use Escrow.com. They act as a middleman in the transaction and the money doesn’t pass to the seller until the buyer is satisfied with the item. There is a fee, which the buyer would be expected to pay, but it's well worth it when big money is changing hands.

2. If you are buying collectible gold coin, a big issue is grading. The seller's idea of an MS65 may not be the same as yours. There can be a huge difference in price between an MS64 and an MS65 and the grading difference isn't always very obvious. Buy only certified gold coins that have been graded by one of the third party grading services and you will have peace of mind. Make sure that you only accept the major services (ANACS, NCG, PCGS, NCS, ICG) grading, there are some lesser known grading services whose grading may be suspect. Make sure that the grading wasn't done too long ago. Coin grading standards have changed over time and what was an MS65 five or ten years ago, might only be an MS63 or 64 today.

3. If you are purchasing a non-certified coin, make sure you will be allowed to return any coin if you are not satisfied. This should apply to both on-line and off-line dealers. You want to have the option to return it if your grading service returns a lower grade than you bought it at.

4. Buy the scarcest coin in the best condition that you can afford. Many collectible gold coins sell near the melt price of gold because there are more than enough around to cover demand. This is especially true in the lower grades. When gold increases or decreases in value, these coins will follow by a like percentage. But the higher the grade, the lower the population and demand will push up the price rather than just following the price of gold.

5. You can't call the tops and bottoms of the coin market any more than you can do it in the stock market. Make your investments regularly. Dollar cost averaging will do better for you in the long run than trying to call the turns.

Since the U.S. Mint is having such difficulty keeping gold coins on the market, let's take a look at the Royal Australian Mint. Currently the Mint's online catalog includes 9 individual Australian gold coins and one set of three Commonwealth gold coins. I'll give the listed international prices, within Australia there is GST added. I've eliminated cents and used a conversion rate of .698299...of course this changes daily.

Buying Gold Now is not Easy

Back in March, gold was $1000 an ounce and there was no problem buying as much as you wanted. Gold is now sitting in the $700+ range, and the demand is greater than ever. Individual investors are buying like crazy, countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran are moving their dollars into gold and China is thinking of moving (more likely, already moving) some of their huge store of dollars into gold.

What does this mean to you, the small gold investor? Right now it means gold coins and bullion are hard to come by. Many dealers have none to sell, and those that do are marking up prices to meet demand. This is not the time to be switching everything into precious metals. It should be a reminder that if you buy gold regularly, you are able to average your costs over the long run and you won't be paying a big premium overall.

Keep an eye on Ebay gold coin auctions. Many times gold coins with numismatic value end up selling for close to the same percentage over melt as bullion coins. This can be an opportunity to profit when gold settles down as the spread on numismatic coins will tend to expand again.

Gold Investment Picking Up Steam

With the economy going down the tubes, the credit markets frozen, the stock market doing a swan dive and the government spending $700 BILLION to bail out the bums who put us in this predicament, is it any wonder that people are turning to gold bullion and gold coins to provide some stabilization.

2009 St. Gaudens Double Eagle on Display

The U.S. Mint announced that the one-ounce ultra-high relief 24-karat 2009 Double Eagle based on the original Augustus St. Gaudens design will be displayed at the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money, the country's largest coin show. The show will open on July 30 at the Baltimre Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

The coin will be more than 50% thicker than other U.S. 24 karat gold coins, to allow for the ultra-high relief strike that St. Gaudens had originally designed for.

First Spouse Gold Coin Series - Louisa Adams

On May 29 at Noon Eastern Time, the U. S. Mint will release the sixth gold one half ounce coin in the First Spouse Gold Coin Series which will commemorate Louisa Adams, wife of our sixth president, John Quincy Adams. She owns the distinction of being the only first lady to have been born outside the United States, her place of birth being London.

The Louisa Adams gold coin will be issued in Proof as well as Uncirculated condition. There is a limit of 40,000 coins to be issued and the number of Proof and Uncirculated will be determined by the flow of orders. The issue prices are $619.95 for the Proof coin and $599.95 for the uncirculated version. During the first week, there will be a one coin per household limit. This will be reevaluated at the end of the week.

The First Spouse Gold Coins have a $10 face value and are minted in 24 karat gold.

New Double Eagle to Debut in 2009

On Friday, the U.S. Mint announced that it has received authorization from Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson to issue a one-ounce ultra-high relief 24-karat gold coin in 2009 based on the 1907 Double Eagle designed by Augustus St. Gaudens. Mintage of the new St. Gaudens style Double Eagle will be unlimited for one year.

There are only provisions for a 2009 dated coin, though sales may continue in 2010 should the coin still be in stock. The coin will be 27 millimeters thick, more than 50% thicker than other U.S. 24 karat gold coins, to allow for the ultra-high relief strike.

Thought the design will be based on the St. Gaudens design of 1907, there will be some differences to the original. On the obverse, there will be 50 stars, instead of the 46 in 1907. The coin will also contain the Roman numerals "MMIX" (2009) and the reverse will have "In God We Trust" since it is required by current law.

2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative Proof Set

2008 brought a new commemorative group from the U.S. Mint, the Bald Eagle Commemorative, which was minted in a $5 gold coin, a Silver one dollar coin and a clad half dollar, all of which were offered in both proof and uncirculated condition.

Additionally, there was a three coin proof set offered which was limited to just 25,000 sets. Unfortunately, these have been sold out at the Mint, so if you are looking for a set, you'll have to check the secondary market. Non-certified sets are going for between $450 and $500 on Ebay. Certified MS70 sets are bringing anywhere from $550 to $700+. It seems like it will only get more expensive, so if you want a set, now is the time to get it.

Certified Gold Coins | Third Party Grading

Whether you've been buying gold coins for twenty years or just starting, one major issue is making sure that the grade you are paying for is the grade you are getting. Whether you are seeing it at your local coin dealer or a coin show or over the internet, unless you are a professional, grading can be a problem.

The reason is that grading is subjective: what I think is an MS63, you may describe as an MS65. Since the pricing difference can be astronomical between grades, it's imperative you get what you are paying for.

That's where third party grading comes in. There are several independent third party grading services, such as ANACS (American Numismatic Association Certification Service), NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corpporation), PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) and ICG (Independent Coin Grading Company), who will grade your coin and encapsulate it to prevent tampering. For the most part, coins graded by these services can be bought and sold at the given grade.

When you are spending a lot of money on a rare coin, make sure you buy certified, it will save you a lot of headaches in the long run
